» Biography
Inspired by the Sunday hardcore matinees of New York's legendary club CBGB's, Jeff Altieri recruited his brother Marco and formed ENRAGE in 1991. The band then released its first demo 'Burning within'. Produced by Josh Silver of Type O Negative, the tape sold well over 3.000 copies. Sales from the tape as well as subsequent recordings earned the band gigs in NYC's Limelight, Wetlands, CBGB's, and Coney Island High. The band became fortunate enough to play with a wide variety of national acts such as Bad Brains, Type O Negative, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Prong, Biohazard, Life of Agony, Lords of Brooklyn, Gwar, Sick of it all, Morbid Angel, D-Generation, Overkill, Dickies, Murphy's Law, Eve's Plum, Dog Eat Dog, Kreator, Testament and Earth Crisis. Meanwhile, Marco Altieri began promoting all ages shows in his home town. Local news started featuring Marco and Enrage for running charity shows for AIDS awareness and cancer research. WABC News also focused on Enrage logos in a segment featuring graffiti in NYC suburbs. Other unexpected exposure came to the band when the band's T-shirt was worn by one of MTV's 'Headbangers Ball' co-hosts. In 1995, the band released the cd 'Empty'. The cd was produced by Noah Evans, who had previously worked with the Beastie Boys, Lucious Jackson, Bad Brains, Cro-Mags, Fear, and Sick of it all. 'Empty' was distributed to over one hundred major college markets. The cd was played on WSOU's heavy rotation (average 114000 listening base) and Enrage repeatedly hit the stations top ten countdown as well as the year end list. Enrage was also on WSIA's top thirty five artists list, reaching number one on album cuts and audience response for ten weeks. The band also reached Hits magazine ten most added in the 'metal/punk/hardcore' section as well as CMJ's 'Loud Rock' top 75. WXRK radio 'KROCK' featured the band on the national morning, Howard Stern show. Literally, millions of listeners heard Stern play a cut from the cd, read the lyrics and give Enrage a positive review over the airwaves. The radio push was done by the band's own promotion. With mostly show sales, mailorder and independent distribution, over ten thousand forms of various merchandise has been sold.
